The FTC Robotics class is a three day exploration into the many aspects involved in coaching a competitive FTC robotics team. The class is largely a hands on experience where participants learn how to set up and program a robot. This is interspersed with discussions on the many other aspects of coaching and preparing an FTC team for competition. The class is largely self paced, making it suitable for rookie and veteran coaches alike. No prior knowledge is assumed in getting started. Most programming tasks are open ended allowing for veteran participants to work on more advanced techniques. The many discussions offer opportunities for coaches to share their experiences and learn from others. The major topics are highlighted below:
– Emphasis on setting up and programming robots using the FTC blocks programming environment. Advanced users may also program in Java with Android Studio.
– Cover the setup and use of wireless communications for debug. – Study the use of different programming modes used for autonomous and driver controlled periods.
– Develop programs using a variety of sensors available to FTC teams. – Learn how to avoid common pitfalls in the electronic module placement and wiring that lead to poor performance.
– Explore the different types of hardware build systems commonly used by teams. – Discuss useful guidelines in getting ready for a tournament and effective ways to prepare for judging.
– Cover some of the tips and tricks that Field Technical Advisers use to quickly diagnose and fix team problems on the field.
Participants are required to bring a wireless laptop. All necessary software will be installed in class, except for those wishing to program in Java. They should have Android Studio preinstalled. All other robotics materials are provided.
