The last, and second largest SuperQuest of Summer 2016 will be at the Table Rock Campus of Rogue Community College from August 16 – 18. Southern Oregon has been an enthusiastic partner in SuperQuest for years, and put on an event with distinctly local expertise — many courses are only offered at Southern Oregon. Register here.
Why come in person, when so many resources are available virtually, including ones I put up here on the blog?
From talking to teacher attendees, SuperQuest offers:
- time to share experiences and challenges with colleagues teaching similar subjects; few of you have more than one tech or CTE teacher in your school, and sometimes are the lone torchbearer in your district;
- time to learn new materials with expertise at hand;
- discussions that place that new material in the context of teaching it to specific student populations, with people who wrangle those students in classes from term to term;
- the opportunity to stretch your own learning, and to hear from advocacy, policy, and industry people who want you to succeed at inspiring the next generation of tech workers;
- the opportunity to be renewed and inspired in your work with students and technology.
Most of the SuperQuest classes I’ve been lucky enough to sit in on, or discuss with instructors, have a particular challenge: the participants are either novices in the subject matter, or have several years experience. I have watched SuperQuest faculty work to make the workshop valuable and inspiring to both groups, and the participating teachers work with each other to conquer new material, strategize teaching tactics and lesson planning for different student populations, and share those always-needed free and cheap resources.
I’ve also been lucky enough to chat with people long enough to help make connections around dual credit, inclusive pedagogy for technology, the Oregon Game Project Challenge, various kinds of robotics, the Associate of Science Oregon Transfer – Computer Science Degree, the Aspirations in Computing Awards from the National Center for Women in Information Technology, Oregon Afterschool for Kids, and more.
Come join us at SuperQuest — if not this summer, plan for next summer!
