Writing stories and writing code don’t need to be in opposition. The open-source framework Twine let’s you interleave code and story text to build up novel, interesting, new forms of fiction. Twine, and interactive fiction in general, provides an incredibly useful path for both introducing programming to youth who don’t see themselves as programmers and giving a creative outlet to tech minded youth who don’t see themselves as artists. In this workshop we’ll explore this incredible opportunity to cross over between computer science and the language arts.
Participants will get an intro to Twine, make a short interactive story, and brainstorm ways to integrate teaching Twine with their school’s language arts classes. Only free/open source resources will be discussed and all handouts or slides will be provided through GitHub. The content is aligned to NGSS and Common Core standards as a part of our work with Portland Public Schools.
