Goals: 

  • Make the case that the need for CS goes beyond more software engineers
  • Overview of the moving pieces at play in CS education in Oregon and nationally, to better enable collaboration
  • See new opportunities for collaboration and resource leveraging, especially across the industry-education boundary

Master of Ceremonies: Terrel Smith, President, Oregon Computer Science Teachers Association

Special Guest Ruthe Farmer has focused her efforts on diversity and inclusion in Ruthetechnology and engineering since 2001. She currently serves as Senior Policy Advisor for Tech Inclusion at the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy focusing on President Obama’s call to action for Computer Science for All and other tech related initiatives. Over the course of her career, Ms. Farmer has successfully launched and scaled up multiple national programs including Intel Design & Discovery, LEGO Robotics for Girl Scouts (both started in Oregon), the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing, TECHNOLOchicas campaign for Latinas, AspireIT outreach program, and more. She served as the 2012 Chair of Computer Science Education Week, was named a White House Champion of Change for Technology Inclusion in 2013, received the Anita Borg Institute Award for Social Impact in 2014, and the Education UK Alumni Award for Social Impact in 2015. She is a guest contributor for Techcrunch and the Shriver Report, and has been featured in Forbes and TechRepublic for her work. Ruthe holds  a BA from Lewis & Clark College and an  MBA  in  Social  Entrepreneurship  from  the  University  of  Oxford  Said Business School and is passionate about integrating innovative business strategies into social change efforts.

Ivan Sutherland’s 1963 PhD thesis developed a precursor to the graphical user interface called Sketchpad, and started us down the path to Computer Aided Design (CAD), the personal computer, drop down menus, icons, touch devices … and Sutherland’s induction into the Inventor’s Hall of Fame this year. He is also the recipient of the US National Academy of Engineering Zworykin Award (1972), the Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Turing Award (1988), the Smithsonian Computer World Award (1996), the Kyoto Prize (2012) for global achievement, and a Special Founder’s Award, Virtual Reality Foundation (2015). He is a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences since the 70s. Sutherland and his wife, Marley Roncken, jointly perform research at the Asynchronous Research Center at Portland State University.
